Why do babies like to look over your shoulder (at NOTHING) and smile, like someone is there making funny faces at them? It freaks me out. You hear about the paranormal experts (oxymoron, anyone?) saying that children often are more sensitive to things that most adults aren't able to see or feel. Ghosts, auras, intentions... whatever the argument is for, it's kind of unsettling when mine does this. And it's always, ALWAYS when she's on her changing table. I'm elbow deep in diaper duty, and I look up at her and she's smiling and cooing at something behind me. How can this not creep you out? I turn around and see nothing, but still wonder if there is something there that I just can't detect. Could she be seeing an old friend, family, or something else? Could the fact that she's so new in this world somehow allow her to be able to communicate with a different realm or reality? Is she somehow seeing my late father and recognizing him as her grandpa? Or, is this one of her first attempts to mess with her mother? If she's anything like me, she'll find great joy in making light of any situation.
Who knows? But, I still tell her to say, "hi" to Dad for me... Every time.
